Service in a time of chaos

As I talk to my clients the past few weeks, I continued to be astounded by the depth and determination that they have in continuing to serve clients. In a time of chaos and crisis, it can be easy to look inward to worry about ourselves. It can be easy to default into making sense of the constantly evolving logistics, ignoring the pain so many are experiencing. It can be easy to look away. Yet, these amazing nonprofits and their amazing staff continue to serve the most vulnerable among us. Recognizing that if not now, when. They are staying focused on their mission, innovating ways to deliver supports, and forging new collaborations to maximize shrinking resources.

The nonprofit sector in Rhode Island, and nationally, is strong and just what we need right now. While the medical professionals care for those who are sick, the public health professionals and elected officials try to keep us all safe with common sense policies, and grocery and delivery workers work tirelessly to ensure the public has what they need, the nonprofit workforce are lifting up the voices of those on the margins, keeping their needs front and center.

It can be hard when with all the uncertainty to find ways to give back, but I implore you to consider, if not now, when? During these unprecedented times, please remember our nonprofit community needs us now more than ever. If you can give, give. If you can help, help. If you can donate goods, donate. Let’s use this time to build each other up, fight inequities where they have always existed, and remember to be a little kinder. Finally, if you know a nonprofit hero, make sure to thank them for all they are doing to support our communities.
